I am currently in the process of creating new models for Alex and Cruz. I did this painting to see where I could push the character. I painted over a render of the older model. The original model I had created was difficult to animate. I had a load of trouble with getting expressions on the face to read accurately. Alex’s white skin made it difficult to stand out in many scenes. It was also very boring color for a dragon. I changed it to yellow. I love frills on a dragon, so I finally put them on Alex’s model, something I wanted to do in the first place. The face is more blunt and pointed, this is done so his expressions a more readable. I removed the horns on the artwork but added them back on the model. I thought little wings would be cool, but then realized how dorky they look. So I didn’t add them.
I didn’t make concept art for Cruz. JD was at my house the other day, he basically watched me for 3 hours creating the model’s face, giving me input on what he wanted (A very bad way to design I must admit, its better to do concept art and sketches first)
The new WIP versions of Alex and Cruz are good enough to began using in the comic. Also I will be uploading my first lip sync animation that was animated by hand.
As I mentioned, Alex and Cruz is a big project and is constantly evolving.
Some concepts for Alex and Cruz. This project will began on Jan of 2015. It is a short comic spoof with Cruz as a superhero (one of his weaknesses is chocolate FYI). These concepts are part of this story.
The parody comic will be uploaded on Tuesdays and Thursdays. The Sunday /Monday comic with the animals will continue to be uploaded on sun/mon (and will remain a bastion for our insanity) the parody comic will have no link to the Sunday comic. In fact I have redesigned the models for the Sunday comic but that will be for another post
Note both of these sketches are WIP.
A silly animation made by combining the panels of “Primed Dancer” in a endless loop. Looks like spending wads of money on dancing lessons paid off 😛
This is a mixed media digital painting that combines 2d painting with 3d modeling. The models themselves are a WIP and might look totally different by the time I finish them. The main focus of this test was to experiment with different texture patterns. The model currently have no texture maps on them. It’s fun to combine both of my passions together like this.
Our new direction is to have Alex and Cruz and everybody else as ‘normal’ animals. But they would still be living in a urban environment and trying to ‘act’ like humans.
I am experimenting with different designs. In the future I might or might not redesign the 3d models. Alex and Cruz has been a project of mine for almost a year now. One thing about the designs I have been torn with is the amount of anthropomorphism I put in the animals. I been everywhere from simply animals that talk, funny animals, to ‘humanoid animals’ that are basically ‘humans’ with animal’s head and tail . Each type has pros and cons. Talking animals cannot interact with human objects too well. If I use funny animals, then people think its ‘just for children’ and I have to explain why they wear no pants. I’m using humanoid animals right now, but I feel they would be more appealing if made them more animal like. This design goes more toward the ‘funny animal’ style but a little more realistic. One thing is certain I will be using the current 3d models for a while. It takes allot of time to make them.
Promotional Poster art for Alex and Cruz featuring the cast. Why I have Cruz holding a levitating cactus pickle, I do not know. There are still some work needed on certain models, but they are good enough to be greenlighted for now.
The Cast from left to right:
Roger – A macho green dragon. The current antagonist. A bully with a monstrous ego to match.
Chip (Working name) – He is a alligator. Shy and with low self esteem. Wouldn’t hurt a fly.
Cruz – A rambunctious and eccentric cheetah. Careless. Does things on a whelm. Close friend and roommate to Alex
Marty – A sickeningly jolly unicorn.
Alex – A grumpy and irritable Dragon. The Straight Guy. Forever burdened to getting Cruz out of trouble. Close friend and roommate to Cruz.
Sally – A gryphon, and the foil of Alex and Cruz’s schemes.
Just for fun, I imported my models into Daz Studio, and then combined the sub-dragon and the genesis figure into this dragon.. centaur.. thing.. But do not fret, the giant omelet will be worth it in the end. 🙂 I also used this image as a example for a book review.
Lets see, I used Carrara,Hexagon,Daz Studio, and Photoshop to make this (phew).
